The role of the Inter-University Research Institute Corporation

As a core base for academic research for public and private university researchers from across the country, the Inter-University Research Institute Corporation makes an important contribution to the development of Japan’s academic research by conducting effective joint research and providing researchers with benefits difficult for individual universities to maintain, namely;
1) large-scale facilities;
2) a foundation of knowledge comprising enormous amounts of data and academic materials and;
3) a core facility for pioneering new fields of research and networking styled collaborative research.

A top-level, world-class research institution of which Japan can be proud

While maintaining originality and diversity, the Inter-University Research Institute Corporation, as a Center of Excellence (COE) for each respective research field, is a globally top-level research institute advancing leading-edge studies related to important research projects. It also plays the role of a core international research base through the promotion of cooperation and exchange with overseas researchers and research facilities.

A system original to Japan which the likes of can be seen nowhere else in the world

The Inter-University Research Institute Corporation is a world-class academic research promotion system original to Japan. Each Inter-University Research Institute Corporation has established its own steering and other committees which include outside researchers, and is managed with transparency open to the research community. Additionally, in order to plan for smooth and uninterrupted joint usage and research by university researchers, the faculty system, administration based on mid-term targets and plans, the evaluation system, and other components of the Institute conform to National University Corporation standards.

Participation in high-level graduate education

The Inter-University Research Institute Corporation, as the base organization of the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (Sokendai), also assumes a role in advanced graduate education. Sokendai, which maintains its main campus in the town of Hayama in Kanagawa prefecture, is developing a unique doctoral program which places graduate students in the Inter-University Research Institute Corporation and other institutions.

Additionally, it accepts graduate students from public and private universities, lending its support to graduate school education.
